The Story
Nestled in the heart of Nyeri, Kenya, the Gachatha Coffee Factory has been an anchor for coffee quality since 1963. Operated by the Gachatha Farmers’ Co-operative Society (FCS), the factory brings together approximately 1,500 smallholder members who each cultivate around 300 coffee trees. With access to financial support, agronomy training, and resources through partnerships like Coffee Management Services (CMS), these farmers work diligently to produce vibrant, fruit-forward lots celebrated globally. The volcanic soils in the surrounding villages contribute to the ideal terroir for this uniquely bright and structured Kenyan coffee.
Innovation and quality control remain top priorities at Gachatha. Their eco-pulping machine, introduced in 2021, has significantly reduced water usage while enhancing clarity in taste. Ripe cherries are depulped, fermented overnight, and then fully washed and sun-dried on raised beds for up to 15 days. Sustainable practices are central to the factory’s operation: local water sources are recirculated and treated, and indigenous trees are protected to preserve biodiversity. Through the leadership of Chairman Peter Mathenge and continuous training efforts, Gachatha’s members continue to elevate the cooperative’s legacy of excellence.
